Bingo Calls: What They Mean
To make the game more interesting, bingo callers use different jargons for the numbers being drawn in bingo. Imagine life without these jargons - bingo will be a lot more boring. Thanks to these jargons, bingo sounds more interesting and people can easily identify what numbers are being called.
Here are some examples:
One little duck - this is used to denote the number two. Use your imagination to see the shape of a duck in the number two. So from now on, when you play bingo and you hear one little duck, you know you have to mark the number two on your cards.
Lucky - this is the number seven. Worldwide, seven is considered to be a lucky number, in fact, it is considered to be the luckiest number. For example, in slots, the jackpot is usually denoted by three 7's. You may also be familiar with Bruce Willis' movie entitled, Lucky Number Slevin. For your information, slevin is the old name for seven.
Legs eleven - obviously, this one is used for the number eleven. The word "legs" is added to the term to emphasize the figure of the number eleven, which is two straight lines. Sometimes, bingo callers drop the word eleven and use "legs" alone. So, do not be surprised if the bingo caller says "legs", now you know what he or she means.
One dozen - this is another obvious jargon. Twelve makes a dozen, so when the bingo caller shouts "one dozen", you will have to mark the number twelve on your card or cards. He or she does not mean you can mark a dozen numbers on your bingo card, but the number twelve alone. But be careful, not all dozens are made of twelve. Take baker's dozen for example. A baker's dozen is thirteen, instead of twelve. However, in bingo, the number thirteen is more popularly known as "unlucky for some".
Unlucky for some - Many of us believe that thirteen is an unlucky number. Thus, we have the Friday the 13th, which is considered to be the unluckiest day. A lot of buildings in the world do not have a thirteenth floor for that same reason. There's also a horror movie entitled "Thirteen Ghosts". It seems that the number thirteen is often associated with bad luck, evil, or darkness. It's an old superstitious belief, and there's little we can do about it. So, the next time the bingo caller shouts "unlucky for some", you'll know that he or she means the number thirteen.
